Local Building Department/Archives

Inquire about Blueprint Availability: Contact the local building department or archives. Inquire about the existence and availability of blueprints for your specific property. They may have detailed plans of your home, especially if it underwent significant construction or renovation.

Typically, floor plans store local municipality offices, permit agencies, planning offices, and contact builders. Apart from that, you can collect information about your house by asking your neighbor. If you fail to find a floor plan after contacting these offices, you should consider hiring an expert.

Your local council's building and planning application website is the first place to look when you want to find existing floor plans of a building. When undertaking building works, more likely than not, planning permission would have been required.

Other details that help rough-date a house include nails, paint colors, and molding and muntin profiles. Before the 20th century, all of these had styles particular to certain eras. (The manufacture of building materials became fairly standardized by the late 19th century.)
