Iowa women's basketball vs Kansas recap: Highlights from another big Hawkeyes win (2024)

7:47 pm CT November 20, 2024

FINAL: Iowa 71, Kansas 58

Gus Martin

Another stress-free win for the Hawkeyes, making a previously undefeated team look uncompetitive for most of the night.

Iowa is clicking better than most would've expected following so much change from last year.

Olsen and Stuelke led the way with 16 points each.

Q4 2:21, 68-52 Iowa -- Iowa on its way to a win

Gus Martin

Good sign for Iowa that Feuerbach got five quick points after going scoreless for the first 3.5 quarters.

Every Hawkeye who's played tonight has scored, in line with the way Jensen has her team playing to start this season.

It's evident that Iowa is well coached. The team's defensive re-focus over these final few minutes, in addition to their offensive prowess, has been impressive.

It will be interesting to see how Iowa responds when it inevitably faces more adversity than it has in the first five games.

Q4 7:51, 60-49 Iowa -- Kansas getting to the line

Gus Martin

O'Grady picked up her fourth foul after Kansas drew its third shooting foul in just over two minutes.

The Jayhawks will shoot their fifth and sixth free throws after the commercial break, already more than in any of the previous three quarters.

Iowa needs to keep Kansas out of the paint, slow down the game and take care of the ball (12 turnovers).

End 3: 58-46 Iowa -- Even 3rd quarter

Gus Martin

Just when it seemed Iowa might pull away, Kansas fought back to stay within striking distance.

Hawkeyes head coach Jan Jensen went with an interesting lineup to close the frame, leaving top scorers on the bench for a more youthful lineup. The Jayhawks took advantage and trimmed their deficit a bit.

But Iowa is still firmly in control entering the final 10 minutes and should be in position to pull this one out.

Q3 3:33, 54-37 Iowa -- Olsen takes over

Gus Martin

Lucy Olsen is showing why she was one of the nation's most coveted transfers last offseason. She's scoring in different ways and uplifting her teammates during Kansas' spurts.

It's clear the neutral-site crowd is behind the Hawkeyes as the fans went crazy during Iowa's late 5-0 run, capped by an O'Grady layup.

The Jayhawks have also gone cold shooting again - 3-for-12 in the third frame.

Halftime, 38-27 Iowa -- Hawkeyes withstand Kansas response

Gus Martin

Kansas played much better in the second quarter, yet Iowa still kept pace and only lost the frame by three points.

Stuelke might've had the play of the half in the final minute, corralling a difficult offensive rebound and kicking the ball out to Mallegni for her second triple of the quarter.

Stuelke has 10 points, six rebounds and two assists.

But Iowa hasn't gotten much offensively from Kylie Feuerbach or Taylor McCabe, two sharpshooters who might be called upon in the second half.

Q2 3:40, 28-18 Iowa -- Uneven 2nd for Hawkeyes

Gus Martin

The first few minutes of the second frame have been uneven for Iowa.

Kansas has got some momentum back on offense and hit a pair of triples, and the Hawkeyes are starting to have some sloppy possessions of their own.

But, Stuelke continues to be active and seem to have an advantage in the paint.

Affolter and O'Grady both have two fouls, however.

End 1: 18-4 Iowa -- Hawkeyes dominate

Gus Martin

Teagan Mallegni had a terrific wrap-around pass to Addison O'Grady near the end of the frame, which led to an easy layup. The freshman has definitely impressed in the early part of this season, both with her skills and basketball I.Q.

But Iowa's defense is the star of the show so far. Kansas shot just 1-for-11 with five turnovers, unable to get any sort of rhythm or flow.

Hawkeyes came to play tonight.

Q1 1:30, 16-4 Iowa -- Kansas calls TO

Gus Martin

Kansas called a timeout after Iowa came out on a 5-0 run out of the game's first commercial.

Lucy Olsen is off to a strong start with eight points on 3-for-4 shooting.

6:15 pm CT November 20, 2024

Q1 4:52, 9-4 Iowa -- Hawkeyes with good defense early

Gus Martin

Hannah Stuelke set a terrific tone on Iowa opening possession, driving hard to the basket to get an easy layup. She also drew a charge just before the game went to commercial.

Strong defensive start for Iowa as Kansas has shot just 1-of-5 from the field with three turnovers. Four different Hawkeyes players have scored already as well, continuing the team's trend of good ball movement.

Iowa women's basketball vs Kansas prediction

Gus Martin

Tonight will be the first true test for both teams. Still, the Hawkeyes should have a slight advantage having already played and won twice away from their home court, while the Jayhawks are traveling for the first time this season.
