Cristiano Ronaldo has failed to score with 20 shots at Euro 2024.

Only Deco, Hierro, Kevin De Bruyne and Dani Olmo have taken more shots at a single European Championship and failed to score.

Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa when asked how he saved his penalties, whether he guessed or studied the takers, responded;

Costa, who was said to be in tears when receiving his man of the match award, added

It's no surprise than Jan Oblak is gutted by his side's loss, and he told the media;

John Terry has labelled the BBC a 'disgrace' after the broadcaster mocked Cristiano Ronaldo for his penalty miss in Portugal's victory against Slovenia.

Ronaldo had the opportunity to score the winner from the penalty spot in the closing stages but his effort was kept out by Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

As they showed a replay of the penalty, the BBC added the caption 'Misstiano Penaldo', which sparked a furious reaction from former Chelsea star Terry. In an Instagram story, Terry stated: 'BBC this is a disgrace.'

Cristiano Ronaldo speaking to the media has said;

There were some standout players for Slovenia but you can't argue too much after Diogo Costa's incredible penalty shootout.

One of the best shootout performances from a goalkeeper in history.

Cristiano Ronaldo gave the ball a kiss and placed it on the penalty spot. How many times must he have been through this routine over the course of the previous 20 years?

Beating the goalkeeper from 12 yards has been integral to his brilliance, integral to his claim to be the greatest of all.

If he could do it again, beat Jan Oblak and finally break the Slovenian resistance in the first half of extra time then surely Portugal would be into a quarter-final against France in Hamburg on Friday.

Ronaldo's Al-Nassr team-mate Sadio Mane has sent him a message on his Instagram stories, insisting the Portuguese great 'remains a great champion'.

Let's not forget about the effort Slovenia put in this game.

They defended valiantly throughout the 120 minutes with incredible performances from Bijol and Drkusic at the back.

Their tactics nearly paid off too as they kept Portugal quiet, and if it wasn't for a tame effort by Sesko in extra-time, they would be in the quarter-finals against France.

Ultimately, Portugal had the superior players in the shootout and a goalkeeper who was in inspired form.

They can be very proud of their performance tonight.

Alan Shearer on BBC has praised Ronaldo for his penalty after missing one in extra-time.

The England legend said;

There seemed like a determination within the Portugal team to get Cristiano Ronaldo his goal during the game against Slovenia.

His free-kicks failed to trouble Slovenia too much, a lot of balls were aimed at him which he couldn't quite reach and his penalty in extra-time wasn't struck bad, but Oblak's brilliant summed his game up.

Ronaldo was in tears at half-time of extra-time after his penalty miss.

That was until his disbelief turned into relief after the netted Portugal's first penalty in the shootout.

It showed great character from the Portugal legend, but there was never any question about that, and he was always destined to make up for his earlier miss.

However, there will be questions about his performances at the Euros and his lack of goals ahead of his toughest test yet at the competition in France.

They weren't bad penalties by the Slovenia trio at all but Costa was simply unbeatable in that shootout.

And don't forget his save from Sekso in stoppage time too. That could have been their tournament over right there.

The whistle goes and we are off to penalties!

Two huge moments, Ronaldo's penalty which was saved, and Sesko's huge miss.

Big moments for both sides and we are going to a shootout.

Ronaldo certainly will be wanting to avenge his miss.

The corner is played short and Portugal waste what could be their last attack with the ball eventually falling to Ruben Neves who blasts way over the bar.

There is one minute of stoppage time.

Corner for Portugal, could this be the moment.

Oblak collects a long ball and we are approaching the final minute of extra-time.

Penalties on the way unless someone can become a hero

On comes Nelson Semedo and Ruben Neves - certainly with penalties in mind - with Pepe and Joao Cancelo off.

No surprise with Pepe he was on too long it appears and it nearly cost Roberto Martinez's side the game.

That should be 1-0!

Pepe is dispossessed and Benjamin Sekso is through on goal but Costa makes the save! Massive save he had to score did the striker.

Pepe is out on his feet.

The free-kick is straight at the wall and Portugal are able to clear.

Not long after Celar is all on his own as he tries to mount an attack but Portugal again deal with it.

Slovenia have a free-kick as Diogo Jota fouls Verbic on the edge of the box.

The free-kick is whipped into the box and Joao Palhinha's header is punched over the bar by Jan Oblak!

The resulting corner sees Ronaldo clatter with Oblak and a foul to Slovenia is given.

That's a cynical challenge from Balkovec as Joao Cancelo tries to run past, as he knocks the Portuguese man onto the floor.

He knew he couldn't keep up and didn't even look at the ball.

There are tears from Ronaldo who has made it a personal mission to score at this year's Euros.

He hasn't scored in Germany and we are 15 minutes away from a penalty shootout.

Joao Palhinha and others are having words with him to try and get him back in the zone.

It was an outstanding save from Oblak who tipped it onto the post and away.

There is contact and this is Ronaldo's chance to break his Euro 2024 duck.

Stanokovic gets a yellow card for a very obvious pull back of the shirt on Joao Palhinha.

Wasted free-kick which is too heavy for Diogo Jota to get on the end of it.

The game has gone really flat from a Portuguese point of view and they need to make a change.

Dangerous ball from Diogo Jota as it's deflected on the way seemingly to Cristiano Ronaldo but Bijol is again there to head it behind.

From the resulting corner Conceicao crosses the ball which is hanging in the air and Jota can't get enough power on it, making it an easy save for Oblak.

Joao Cancelo loses the ball to Elsnik and a shot is deflected wide and put behind for a Slovenia corner!

The corner comes in and there's some pinball in and around the box before Stankovic has a snap shot which goes wide of Costa's goal.

Celar gets support from Elsnik who gets past Nuno Mendes but his cross isn't good enough and it's Ruben Dias who clears the ball away from danger.

Slovenia fans are bouncing in the stands.

Bruno Fernandes lets rip from 30 yards but it is blocked by Stankovic.

Nuno Mendes shimmies away from Karnicnik and puts in a cross but the ball is allowed to go out of play by the Slovenian defenders.

Portugal get us back underway for the beginning of extra-time.

England wasted no time in extra-time yesterday, can Portugal or Slovenia score early and do the same?

The Slovenia and Portugal teams both gather together in a circle with the managers leading the team talks - trying to motivate their sides going into extra-time.

The resulting corner comes to nothing and this game is going to extra-time.

Cristiano Ronaldo wins a corner and this is their last chance to stop the game going an extra 30 minutes...

The corner comes in and it's Ronaldo vs Oblak and the Slovenian keeper gets up well and punches clear.

A whistle is blown and it's judged that Oblak was fouled by Jota leaning in on him.

And Portugal have a corner! Ronaldo throws his arms in the air urging for their supporters to give some noise which they are responding to.

Lovely bit of control from Diogo Jota who then tries to slide in Cristiano Ronaldo but there's a vital block by Balkovec!

Portugal attack again and again Jota plays a lovely reverse ball through to Ronaldo and surely this is his moment but no! It's comfortable for Jan Oblak who gets his angles right and his effort is saved.

Pepe rises to the occasion twice to head two balls into the box from Slovenia, showing his own defensive capabilities.

Two minutes plus stoppage remaining before this game goes to extra-time.

Stojanovic who has been very impressive is replaced by Verbic.

They held England to a goalless draw last time around they might just hold Portugal to a 0-0 here and take this game to extra-time.

Still time for a late twist in the tale...

Another ball goes into the Slovenia box and it is Bijol again there to head it out of danger. Undoubtedly the man of the match so far.

But surely Slovenia can't continue to allow Portugal to put in this many crosses.

Slovenia have an answer to everything Portugal are throwing so far.

Another ball goes into the Slovenia box towards Bernardo Silva and they are again able to clear.

A painful one for Bruno Fernandes not long as he gets studs on the back of his foot. There is a brief stoppage allowing players to get a quick drinks break in.

Another cracking challenge from Bijol who dives in on Diogo Jota who is played through by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rafeal Leao meanwhile is brought off for Francisco Conceicao.

Slovenia made two changes too, with Sporar and Mlakar coming off for Celar and Stankovic.

Joao Cancelo is having a blinder of a half on that right hand side for Portugal everything positive is through him.

He works a cross into the box and it just narrowly goes over the head of Bernardo Silva. Perhaps one that Cristiano Ronaldo wished he was in the right position for after some earlier ones just evaded him.

Another one over the top from Ronaldo and he is getting mocked with Messi chants by the Slovenia fans.

It will be a brave Portugal team-mate to take the next free-kick off him.

Slovenia having a lot more possession than they did in the first-half with some promising counter attacks but the final ball not quite paying off for them just yet.

More good defending in their box as well, with Bijol clearing after another cross from Joao Cancelo.

Portugal not long after win a free-kick, with Ronaldo again shaping himself up to take it.

Cristiano Ronaldo runs into a dead end and he and the Portugal fans are not happy.

The PA at the stadium is giving a warning to fans about the flares.

Rafael Leao gets past his man and thinks he wins a corner but the referee wrongly gives a goal kick to the relief of Karnicnik.

Meanwhile Jota comes on for Vitinha. A mystery to some why he doesn't start more games for his country when he is fit, but a chance to prove himself here.

Diogo Jota is about to come on for Portugal... a man for the big goal at Liverpool.

Slovenia on the counter attack through Benjamin Sekso and it's a one-on-one race with 41-year-old Pepe.

The young attacker has the pace though Pepe does well to keep him under just enough pressure and Sesko slides the ball wide with a tame effort!

That could prove a huge miss for Slovenia.

Some flares have gone off in the Slovenia end the BBC commentary team say, perhaps thought they were about to take the lead.

Great determination from Slovenia to clear the ball out of danger after another dangerous attack started by Joao Cancelo who has had a bright start to the half.

Some good work by Cancelo on the right and he plays the ball to Vitinha who tries a cute backheel to a team-mate but it can't quite get through.

Not long after Cancelo down the right again and he wins a corner.

Brilliant free-kick from Ronaldo who blasts a powerful effort on goal but fortunately for Jan Oblak it's straight at him and he reacts well to parry it away.

Either side of Oblak that would have been tough for the Slovenian keeper to stop.

Joao Cancelo wins a free-kick just on the edge of the box. Just as he releases the ball he gets caught by a Slovenian player.

Good chance here for Portugal. No surprises on who wants to take it...

Dangerous attack from Slovenia as Sesko pokes the ball through to Sporar and the ball is eventually recycled back to Sporar who heads over but the initial pass was offside.

Pepe is the victim of a clumsy challenge from Benjamin Sesko and goes down yelling in pain.

Pepe bangs his hand on the ground before Sesko helps him up.

No yellow card for the Slovenia man.

Slovenia play the corner short and it's whipped in for Elsnik at the back but he can't quite get the ball despite his acrobatic efforts.

Portugal attack down Slovenia's right with Joao Cancelo doing excellently to weave his way in and out of the oncoming defenders.

He dummies twice before passing back to his Man City team-mate Bernardo Silva via a deflection but his shot goes well over the bar.

Slovenia attack the other end and win a corner.

Slovenia get us underway and go straight for a long ball which Portugal are able to head out for a throw-in.

Big 45 ahead for both nations.

Portugal so close to getting that goal before half-time after some excellent work from Rafael Leao and Joao Palhinha's driven shot.

Huge chance at the end of the half as Rafael Leao does brilliantly again on the left to get past Drkusic and he finds Joao Palhinha on the edge of the half and it hits the post and goes wide!

And that's half-time!

Slovenia will be happy they have been well disciplined and made it very difficult for Portugal. Great performances from Drkusic and Bijol.

For Portugal it seems like they are determined to get Ronaldo his first goal of the tournament but it hasn't happened yet - and he is visibly frustrated!

The corner comes in and Bijol tries to flick the ball on to a team-mate but it goes behind for a goalkick.

Two minutes of stoppage time awarded.

Slovenia win the ball and Benjamin Sekso has an effort from well outside the box which is saved by Costa.

Moments later they have acres of space down the left flank which is left vacant by Joao Cancelo and they win themselves a corner.

Drkusic is winning his battle with Cristiano Ronaldo who he beats to the ball after a pass from Bernardo Silva.

At the other end Slovenia try to mount an attack but Vitinha does well to win the ball and keep it under pressure.

Ronaldo perhaps guilty of being over-indulgent here as his free-kick from a crazy angle goes well wide of goal.

At the other end Sekso rushes forward and puts the ball back and Nuno Mendes has to put the ball behind for a Slovenia corner!

Portugal are able to deal with the corner but something for them to think about with all this dominance, Slovenia can mount some danger on the counter attack.

Yellow card for Karnicnik who is having a nightmare against Rafeal Leao.

The AC Milan star is juggling down the left flank and the Slovenian puts out his hand blatantly to give away the free-kick.

Ronaldo is lining this free-kick up from a very acute angle. The referee runs over and moves the ball to make it even more difficult for him to Ronaldo's amusem*nt.

Another headed opportunity for Ronaldo and he's raging!

Vitinha puts the ball in the box but he again just misses it!

It's the Ronaldo's show, but there's nothing to show for it. He is desperate to get his first goal of the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo takes the free-kick and it's a beauty from the forward as it has stunning power but just not enough dip to go into the back of the net.

Brilliant free-kick and Jan Oblak would have struggled to get that one.

Cynical challenge from Drkusic who stops a brilliant run from Rafeal Leao before the Portugal man gets into the box and it's a yellow card for the Slovenian defender.

Big chance for Portugal just outside the box.

Drkusic pleads his innocence but he got none of the ball.

Vitinha has been Portugal's best player so far and he spins a Slovenian midfielder before finding Ronaldo who loses the ball.

But Portugal quickly win the ball back and Nuno Mendes puts in a brilliant ball into the box which is nearly met by Bernardo Silva but Slovenia clear.

The ball goes back into the box from Joao Cancelo and Ronaldo finally gets his head on the ball but it bounces off Drkusic who is impressing for Slovenia in defence.

Another dangerous ball aimed at Ronaldo but Drkusic defends well to beat the legendary forward to the ball and head it out for a throw-in.

Nuno Mendes hurls the ball into the box but Slovenia are able to clear through Benjamin Sekso, but the in-demand striker is stopped in his tracks by two Portugal players.

Boos from the Slovenian fans who feel Rafael Leao should be booked for a challenge on Gnezda Cerin but it does look the Portuguese man slipped into the tackle.

Chance for Bruno Fernandes who hits it hard and true but his effort is straight at Jan Oblak.

The referee did blow the whistle though for a handball from Joao Palhinha so it wouldn't have stood.

Stojanovic plays a ball over the top to Sporar but Mendes does well to win the ball. He does go on to lose the ball back to Slovenia before winning it again.

Sporar then fouls the Portugal defender who is right in the thick of it so far this game.

Slovenia not offering much going forward but they will be happy for the score to still be goalless.

Petar Stojanovic dives in on Nuno Mendes and wins the ball but the Portugal man is down hurt.

He takes some time to get up and limps off but should be able to continue.

A yellow card for Andrez Sporar for simulation as he goes down with barely any contact from Portugal's Vitinha.

Portugal putting in some dangerous crosses, all appeared to be geared towards Cristiano Ronaldo, and the Al-Nassr forward goes down in the box but he's not appealing for a penalty. There definitely wasn't enough in there for the referee to point to the spot.

Another chance for Portugal as Bernardo Silva swings in a cross from the right that's just above Cristiano Ronaldo's head and beyond the boot of Bruno Fernandes. The pair were inches away from turning it in.

Rafael Leao is causing all sorts of problems on the left and Slovenia give away a free-kick after a pull-back by Zan Karnicnik.

Opportunity for Cristiano Ronaldo who is found by Rafeal Leao in the box, but he can't get the ball out of his feet with Slovenian players around him and he tumbles to the ground.

He gets a big road not long later as he juggles the ball around the Slovenian box - clearly lost none of his confidence!

Free-kick for Portugal which is taken by Vitinha but Pepe can't keep it in as the ball evades everyone in red in the Slovenian box.

Bruno Fernandes whips a dangerous ball into the box which just evades Cristiano Ronaldo and a Slovenian defender is able to put the ball behind under pressure from Rafael Leao.

From the resulting corner, Pepe can't get on the end of it, but Ruben Dias behind him gets it and smashes the ball into the side of the net.

A bit of turf flicks up and he looks down at it in frustration.

Comfortable start for Portugal who are passing the ball around and dominating possession of the ball.

Something they should be doing for the majority of this game but the question is whether it will be easy for them to break through a deep Slovenian defence.

And Portugal get us underway for what hopefully should be a cracker of a game.

Can Portugal return to form or will Slovenia frustrate one of the tournament favourites?

There is a minute's silence for Portugal legend Manuel Fernandes who recenrtly died at the age of 73.

The second highest goalscorer in Sporting Lisbon's history.

A yellow card for Cristiano Ronaldo or Joao Palhinha would rule them out of the quarter-final against France.

The same for Ruben Neves who is on the bench for his country.

Slovenia beat Portugal 2-0 in a Ljubljana friendly on March 26 with Adam Gnezda and Timi Elsnik scored the goals.

That was only a friendly, can they pull off an upset on the big stage?

The teams are in the tunnel and Ronaldo has his eyes closed, probably thinking about scoring for his country this evening!

He opens his eyes as the teams walk out for the national anthems.

Pepe might be 41-years-old now but he still seems as important as ever to how this Portugal side operates.

He was one of their star performers in their opening two games, and was among the rested players for their loss to Georgia.

It's safe to say he might be targeted by Kylian Mbappe should Portugal meet France in the quarter-finals but Pepe is a competitive monster on the pitch and is a great player for Roberto Martinez's side to have back in their starting XI tonight.

Hopefully we are in for a cracking game this evening after a France vs Belgium clash where both of those sides again lacked quality.

Portugal are heavy favourites to face France in the quarter-finals.

They played a much-changed side against Georgia which led to them suffering a shock loss in their final group stage game.

Ronaldo who played the last game in his desperate search for a goal, is joined by his usual Portugal team-mates and the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva should be nice and fresh for tonight's game.

But the Georgia game should be a wake-up call for Portugal and let's not forget Slovenia held England to a draw and will be looking to frustrate another giant of the international game.

Nobody has more goals in Euros finals than his 14. Nobody has scored in more Euros than him (5). But he is goalless in his last four games. He has not scored in the Euros finals since two penalties in a 2-2 draw against France in the group stage in Budapest in 2021.

Tonight's match will be the final one held at the Frankfurt Arena at Euro 2024.

The venue has faced some criticism over the pitch cutting up, mainly during England's group stage match against Denmark.

The match was one of three 1-1 draws at the stadium during Euro 2024, while the fourth game was Slovakia's 1-0 win over Belgium.

It has been a stadium of close matches. Will that trend continue tonight?

Slovenia have named the same starting line-up in their three matches at Euro 2024 to date.

Manager Matjaz Kek has been forced to make one alteration tonight with left back Jure Balkovec starting in place of the suspended Erik Janza.

Quite the task ahead of Balkovec tonight in attempting to help the defence keep out Portugal's attack.

The rest of Kek's team is unchanged.

No surprise in the Portugal line-up as Roberto Martinez reverts to the same team which cruised to a 3-0 win over Turkey.

That means there are eight changes from the 2-0 defeat to Georgia in the final group match.

The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Pepe, Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leao are among those to return.

And you guessed it, Cristiano Ronaldo starts in attack.
