Review by EqqiSyahputra ★★
This film actually has a lot of potential that can be developed as well as a unique premise, but unfortunately it feels like many are missing in it. The story seems deviated and does not focus on the main characters and stories. Instead of filling the entire film with riddles and answers "man from the sea", this film focuses on the stories of all the characters in it. It's not wrong, but it just feels lost. The clarity of the main character doesn't seem to be well explored until the end. The potential of Kris and Takashi's characters can actually be used as comedic centers, but unfortunately there are only a few scenes that show their strong chemistry. The film does not score much, the dialogue is also too focused on the whole and is not summarized well. Even so, I salute all the Japanese actors here who present Indonesian quite well.

Mengalun pelan bagai laut tenang, berguncang-guncang bagai ombak. 'The Man from the Sea' bagaikan kapal yang sedang berada di lautan. Indah.

Koji Fukada's THE MAN FROM THE SEA is a modern fantasy that revolves around the relationship between human and nature and concurrently observing the connection between two different nations. As a collaborative project between Japan and Indonesia (and France)'s film companies, and as a commemoration of Indonesia and Japan's 60th anniversary of diplomatic relationship, Fukada wants to show how these two countries are alike and how they're not in more ways than one.
Inspired by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Fukada links the incident to Aceh, Indonesia which suffered the same tragedy in 2004. Fukada wants the audiences to interpret what Laut, a mysterious man who suddenly surfaced from the sea of Aceh, represents in their own…
